Sports Medicine Physicians have specialized training in the field of medicine that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of injuries that occur during sports and other physical activity.  An Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Physician receives specialized training during a one year fellowship program in sports medicine after finishing a five year residency in Orthopaedic Surgery.

A Sports Medicine fellowship also has advanced training in arthroscopic surgery of the knee, shoulder, and elbow.  Injuries commonly treated by these physicians are:
  • Anterior cruciate ligament tears in the knee
  • Shoulder labral tears
  • Instability of the shoulder
  • Shoulder rotator cuff tears
  • Ligamentous injuries of the elbow
